The short version

One of these is a deal. One of them is being sold to you as a deal.

Ryzen 7 9800X3D: yes, roughly. Around $439 against a $479 list price. A real discount, though not the best it has been.

Radeon RX 9070 XT: no, wait. It is up about 8 percent since August, sits near its high for the year, and is roughly $200 above its all-time low. Every “AMD deals” post pointing you at one right now is pointing at a card that got more expensive.

Prices below were checked on 22 September 2026 and are US figures. They move, which is rather the point of this article.

Ryzen 7 9800X3D: a real discount, not a record

PriceWhen
Current~$43921 September 2026
List$479
Lowest recorded$419.9913 May 2026

So: about $40 off list, which is a genuine saving on a current-generation part. But if you read somewhere that this is the lowest it has ever been, that is not true. It was $20 cheaper in May.

Whether $20 is worth waiting for depends entirely on whether you need a processor now. If you do, this is a fair price. If you are speculating on a better one, you are gambling $20 against the possibility of it not returning.

On what you are actually buying: the 9800X3D scores 39,927 on PassMark CPU Mark, against 34,280 for the previous-generation 7800X3D (cpubenchmark.net, retrieved 22 September 2026). That is a real generational step.

But read our CPU benchmark chart before drawing conclusions from those numbers, because CPU Mark is a multi-threaded score and games are not multi-threaded workloads. The X3D chips rank lower on that chart than their gaming performance deserves, which is the single most misunderstood thing in processor buying.

Radeon RX 9070 XT: this is not the moment

Here is where the “AMD deals” framing falls apart.

PriceWhen
Current~$799.5020 September 2026
August$739.9923 August 2026
2026 low$649.9910 June 2026
All-time low$599.996 March 2025

That is not a price drop. That is a price rise, of roughly 8 percent in under a month, on a card that was $150 cheaper in June and launched at $599.

The number to watch is $650. That is where it sat in June, and it is a demonstrated, recent price rather than a hopeful one. If it returns there, that is a deal. At $800 you are paying a third more than the card’s own history says it is worth.

Why “lowest price ever” posts exist

Worth understanding, because it will save you money repeatedly.

Deal posts are usually written against a single retailer’s “was” price, which is often the inflated list rather than what the thing has actually been selling for. A card marked down from $900 to $800 generates a headline about a $100 saving, while the same card sat at $650 three months earlier.

The fix is trivial: check a price-history tracker before believing any deal claim, including ours. Tools like camelcamelcamel and the various GPU price trackers show you what a product has genuinely sold for over time, not what a retailer would like you to compare against today.

If a claimed deal is not below the recent trend on one of those charts, it is not a deal. It is a price.

What we would actually do right now

Need a processor? The 9800X3D at $439 is reasonable, and the gaming performance is real. Buy it if you need it. Do not buy it because someone called it an all-time low, because it is not.

Need a graphics card? Wait, unless you genuinely cannot. Prices moved against buyers this month and the recent history says $650 is achievable. There is no rush created by a rising price.

Building a whole machine? Buy the processor now if the price suits you and watch the GPU. There is no requirement to buy both in the same week, and GPU pricing is the more volatile half by a wide margin. Our GPU benchmark chart covers how to compare cards properly once you are ready.
